Sunflower vs soy lecithin

Frequently Asked Questions

The story of lecithin began in 1845 with a discovery by the French chemist Theodore Gobley. He isolated an orange-colored substance from egg yolk, which had unique emulsifying properties. He called this lecithin, after the Greek name for egg yolk: lekithos.

Q. What determines the cost of shipping?

The cost of shipping is based upon the weight and/or dimensions of your order, as well as the distance from our point of shipment (Florida) to your location. Rates are calculated automatically by the United States Postal Service (USPS) authorized software embedded into our online order form. We have no influence on the rate calculated.

Please keep in mind that our liquid lecithin comes in glass jars, which does add to the overall weight of the package!

Note:This information only applies to orders within the USA and to Canada. International shipping quotes are customized and inclusive of handling charges.

Q. How does one get a promotion code?

By clicking on the product(s) image of interest a new site with a larger image and three tabs will open: Description / Additional Information / Nutritional. If you still cannot find what you are looking for, email us at info@lekithos.com.

Q. Is your lecithin "solvent free"?

Lecithin is made via solvent extraction using either acetone, ethanol, hexane or a combination thereof, unless it is certified organic or clearly labeled as not having undergone treatment using such processing aids. If a retailer, or online vendor, does not clearly label or describe the manufacturing process, it is safe to assume the product has undergone solvent extraction.

At LEKITHOS, all products titled “100% Natural” are made without chemical solvents such as ethanol, hexane and/or acetone. These are:

100% Natural Liquid Sunflower Lecithin – 16, 32 and 128 fl oz
100% Natural Sunflower Lecithin Capsules – 120 ct

Q. Are your products considered “raw”?

This depends on the definition of “raw”. The raw food community does not consider foods heated above 115 degrees Fahrenheit as “raw”. According to this standard, no lecithin is “raw”. since temperatures during the production of lecithin reach 140 degrees Fahrenheit, or more. Besides heat, another important aspect in determining the “raw food” status of lecithin is the actual production process, or processing method. Conventional lecithin, regardless of raw material, is made via solvent extraction using processing aids such as hexane and/or acetone. We do not consider such products “raw”. however other suppliers do, and even market their products as such!

At LEKITHOS we prefer the term “100% natural” for lecithin that is not certified organic, yet processed mechanically, without the use of chemical solvents.

“Natural” is currently defined in 7 CFR 205.2 as a substance that is derived from mineral, plant or animal matter and does not undergo a synthetic process.

Q. What is the difference between your deoiled sunflower lecithin powder and (soy) lecithin granules?

The major difference is particle size: fine powder vs. granules. Functionality and properties are identical. The granules do have a slightly higher phospholipid content.

LEKITHOS deoiled sunflower lecithin powder and granules are pure lecithin. without the use of maltodextrin and (synthetic) desiccants, additives or preservatives.

Q: Why do you not offer certified Organic Lecithin anymore?

Our manufacturing partner in Europe went out of business in 2014.

At present, the only commercially available 100% organic sunflower lecithin is from Chinese manufacturers.

As an alternative we offer “100% Natural” Sunflower Lecithin, which is solvent-free and made exactly like organic lecithin (via mechanical extraction), except we are using Non-GMO sunflower seeds and not organic ones. In addition, our product does not contain glyphosate residues!

Q: Why do you not offer certified Organic Lecithin anymore?

Q: Does your sunflower lecithin contain Glyphosate?

No, LEKITHOS sunflower lecithin products are Glyphosate Residue Free as tested by Anresco Laboratories in April 2017.

Q: I see organic sunflower lecithin powder advertised online, stating it was made in the USA?

The claim of “Made in USA” is certainly possible, however, the better question is: are all the ingredients used to make this product “Made in USA”?

We have our doubts … as mentioned above, currently the only commercially known liquid organic sunflower lecithin manufacturers are located in China.

The advertised “organic sunflower lecithin powder” as seen online at Amazon.com, and the producers own website, most probably contains Chinese liquid organic sunflower lecithin, which is pulverized (in the USA) with the addition of a carrier and drying agent.

We have had this product analyzed and found that it only contains approx. 70% lecithin, and what appears to be maltodextrin (as carrier) and silicone dioxide (as drying agent).

In addition, there is no information available on the phospholipid and fatty acid profile of this product – neither online, nor on the actual packaging. This information would reveal if said product was merely a lecithin powder blend “containing” organic sunflower lecithin, or actually 100% pure lecithin.

We suspect this product is merely a blend, and not 100% pure organic sunflower lecithin, thereby misleading, if not mislabeled.

We encourage you to do your own research and inquire with the seller and/or manufacturer.
